Trappers and early Hudson’s Bay Company hunters, following the Siskiyou Trail, passed through the site starting in the 1820s. In the late 1840s, settlers (mainly American) following the Applegate Trail started going through the region on their way to the Willamette Valley. The city states the name was chosen to honor General Ulysses S. Grant’s success at Vicksburg. Grants Pass post office was created on March 22, 1865.
Before the factory opened, Oregon-Utah Sugar was mixed in the Utah-Idaho Sugar Company. Due to low acreage put in sugar beets and labour shortages, the processing machines was transferred to Toppenish, Washington in 1918 or 1919.
The historical Rogue Theatre downtown has been transformed into a performing arts site that hosts mainly local acts. The Grants Pass Towne Center Organization’s “Back to the ’50s” Party contains free concerts, a nearly 600-vehicle Classic Car Cruise, Poker Runs, and thematic shopping in town’s downtown historic district.
Year round, there are First Friday Art Nighttime. On the first Friday of every month, most of the downtown shops in the city hold promotional events and artwork shows. This occasion was connected to numerous fights between (typically teenaged) individuals in the downtown region.
